Introduction to a BlueBird

Howdy Reader

BlueBird herself, picture taken by yours truly.

My name is Sarah D. Bartodej but truly, that name is reserved for debt collectors and the IRS. My preferred name is, Blue- a shortened form of BlueBird. The name  also helps me discern the friendly from the more professional communications that I may have because I also have short-term memory loss! (Not so  pronounced as the infamous, Dory...)  I got the nickname when I was young, my head has always been in the clouds and I've always wished that I could fly, frequently dreaming of doing just that. My major is English Literature and I am a senior here at  OU, graduating this Spring in May.  (Woo-hoo!)

I have two little girls, ages 6 and on the 26th my youngest will be two years old. I am a single mother,  within the year (March) divorced. The last year or so has been quite an adventure and I wouldn't have it any other way.  I receive a lot of, "I am sorry." in response to getting a divorce but y'all, it was the very best thing that I could  do for my family. A few others have told me, "Congratulations!" and I suppose that the dissolution was, in fact, one of celebration and a more positive spin to an overwhelming subject. I have since then met a man who authentically treats me with kindness and respect, a nice and refreshing contrast to the very abusive situation that I was in with my ex husband a bit over a year ago now.  In the picture, you can also see that he is a giant and I am a shorty. I like standing on chairs to give him hugs.

Words of positive affirmation

Work of Blue- picture taken by Blue

I am an artist and writer of many media; words, paint, music and much more. I enjoy writing poetry and draw//paint on any surface I can get my fidgety, anxious hands on. This is the current project, a Disney mural in the hallway of my home. There is still lots of work to go. I will hopefully finish this in the next few weeks and will try to remember to add a picture of the completed project.

  1. Yay for being the Blue/bird... wonderful! I use a fox (in honor of Aesop's fox fables) as my online avatar, and I have done that for so many years that many people know me as the Fox. I should probably change my name, ha ha. And I hope that the future will be full of bright new things now that you have found your path. Lovely daughters and beautiful art sound like the right sources of energy to propel you forward! And a mural for your home: that sounds fantastic! Maybe you can share a picture here at your blog when it is done; that would be wonderful to share in the announcements.
And at least for me one of the best things about the Indian Epics tradition is that it is not just about words but about art and music tool. I hope you will get some good energy from all of that too! And as I think I maybe wrote you, blue is THE color: Krishna's name actually means dark/blue, Shiva is Nila-Kantha
, the Blue-Throated god. You have come to the right place! :-)

  2. Hey Blue! I'm an English major too -- Writing, though -- and I think we've been in a few of the same classes these past few semesters (at least Dr. Stalling's Critical Methods). I'm pretty sure you sit in front of me in Dr. Keresztesi's Capstone on Postcolonial Caribbean Literature this semester, too. I'm glad to hear that you've gotten onto a new, better path for yourself, and I hope that the rest of the academic year goes smoothly so you can graduate in May! I'll be graduating then, too. Also, I think that your exploration of art through multiple forms is super admirable -- the best visual art I can produce looks like a high school teacher's crooked stick figures on a whiteboard.

  3. Hi Blue! First I love the opening sentence about your name I laughed probably a little to much at it because I can relate to that all to well. Being an English major I have no clue what goes into that and I applaud you in what ever it takes to do it because, English is one thing that I have done my best at staying away from; however, for some reason no matter what my degree is it still finds its way to make a presence into my course work. Now onto the most exciting thing, the Disney mural, I love it a lot, probably because I am a huge Disney fan. Not sure yet on how i'm feeling about all these new live action movies they are making of all the Disney movies.

  4. Hi Blue! You seem like such a free spirit, something that I would definitely assume to be a wonderful complement to your major, English Literature. I see no shortage of creative energy based on your Introduction! What a wonderful example of inspiration you must be for your family, quirky and artsy mom's are some of the best there are! Your mural is so impressive, it looks like it includes a written quote as well- what a good way to marry your two talents of painting and written expression! I think so many people have been impacted by Disney-- I myself love the classics Pocahontas and Snow White! Imagination is lost on so many as they enter college and then the workforce, but I hope that yours goes on to enhance whatever you choose to make your life's work in the future!

  5. Hey Blue, what a great introduction post! I am so glad you met someone who treats you so well and that you are better off now. I find your children very adorable, so thank you for adding a picture of them! I applaud you for being an English major because I suck terribly at the subject. Thus, I try my best to stay away from English classes. I personally excel in science classes, which is why I am majoring in chemical bioscience. Can't wait to read your stories this semester and see where your imagination leads you!

  6. Hello Blue,
The first sentence of your story had me laughing! Your daughters are absolutely darling. I am also very happy that you are doing better now and have found someone to treat you right. Also your art is amazing! I wish I could draw but unfortunately I did not receive that gene. But from reading your stories I can tell that you are amazing writer and maybe you should start your own blog with your writings and art.

  7. Hi Blue!
First, I have to say that your daughters are adorable!
I applaud you for being a single mom and continuing your education. I have an 11-year old and a 7-month old and there are so many days I have to talk myself into coming back to class. If it wasn’t for my husband, I’d have quit a long time ago. So, hats off to you!
I’ll be interested to see the finished project that you have been working on. Please post pictures when it’s done! I have negative artistic ability, but I very much enjoy seeing other people’s creativity.
I hope you have a great semester!

  8. Hey Blue!
It was really cool to hear your story! I like how you seem to really be yourself and how much you seemed to have grown. Your daughters are really adorable too. I've never met someone who had short-term memory loss either. Congrats on graduating in May too! You must be really excited, because I know I am. I'm excited to see what you come up with this semester and would love to see more pictures of your art.

  9. Hi Blue! It is so nice to meet a fellow senior! By the way, Blue is my favorite color :) Wow this introduction got me so inspired and wanting to live life to the fullest like the way you do. I find it really inspiring that you are a single mom of two and you are trying to finish up your degree while having a special man in your life. Your kids are super cute and they should be proud to have such a strong mother in their life. I appreciate the fact that you have allowed the audience into your personal life and shared some of your life experiences. I am excited and intrigued to see and read your stories and learn more about you! Nice to meet you, Blue!

  10. Hi, Blue! So nice to meet you. Your little girls a so beautiful and they look so happy. You must be such a proud mother! Also, I am a big fan of the Disney mural in your home. Do your girls have a favorite Disney character? I am sure they will cherish that mural for years to come! Also, I love the quote that you included in your post. It is so true!

  11. Hey Blue!

Short term memory loss sounds like it would be terrible! The amount of times I lose my keys or wallet is already terrible. Also, while I have not been married myself, but parents got a divorce when I was at a young age and it was a good thing. It is good to have a positive outlook on things like that. I also love art, but am not the best.

  12. Hi Blue. Why am I not surprised to learn that you are not only a writer but an artist and an English Lit. major? That mural is awesome! Do you write a blog (other than this one obviously) or have a website or anything? Your writing and work is extremely impressive and I'd love to see what you come up with in the future. I wish you the best of luck with everything! PS -- those kids are too precious!!!
