Nala is a king and hears of the beautiful Damayanti. She is of the most beautiful creation and no other has her equal in beauty. He loves her and feels that in his heart, the two are ordained to be wed.

He captures a swan and the swan asks what her desires: Only her, Damayanti.

The bird flies back with the flock and, collectively, they go to the maiden and the swan then tells her all of Nala. She falls in love with him without ever seeing him.

The gods of creation hear of her also. They decide that one of them must marry her. Seeing Nala on his way, they force him who loves Damayanti also, to tell the royal maiden that she must marry one of the eternal beings.

When she sees Nala, she grows even MORE in love with him; he has stolen her heart and will choose no one other than Nala.

She tells him that she will make her decision for him at her swayum -vera. The gods are virtuous and cannot refuse her choice of husband.
